Tractor Power
Farm Tractors are changing so fast that it's bard to keep up. But farmers must know about the latest power ideas to select the one that will give the most "volume of production" for the dollars you invest.
Tractor buying is a complicated job and you need to consider an increasing number of tractor types and items of optional equipment. You must know your requirements, as your needs may be quite different from your neighbors.
Tractor power is increasing faster than size or weight. The result is a tremendous Increase in a farmers capacity to produce. Farm operators who handle a high volume output often place a premium on the reserve capacity of a tractor.
A tight labor supply adds to the value of bigger power, since one tractor can do the work of two smaller ones. This saves a man and reduces cost besides!
New hitch systems can be a great help in getting more production out of big power tractors. Some manufacturers have come out with quick-attaching couplers which are important with Category II and III hitches.
With larger implements, quick attaching couplers can make one-man hookup easier. The coupler is an inverted U-shaped arch, attached to the conventional three points of the tractor hitch.
The frame includes an upper hook which has a long tapered point and two lower coupling jaws, with a latching and unlatching arrangement for the regular implement hitch pin.

To hook up the implement, the hitch is lowered and the tractor backed into place. Then the hitch is raised with the hydraulic system so the upper hook engages the upper pin on the implement.
Further lifting causes the weight of the implement to force the lower hitch pins into place, then spring-loaded latches engage and hold the pins.
Mounted implements have an important advantage: They transfer weight to the rear tractor wheels. Several major manufacturers have come out with hydraulically-controlled systems so that this weight transfers can be done with trailing implements, too.
Any one farm tractor can have a variety of tire sixes and wheel arrangements. As present tractors are light in comparison to horsepower, you may need to add weight to both front and rear for high drawbar loads.
This may be done in various ways. In most cases a lot of dependence is placed on weight transfers to provide a portion of roar wheel weight. Wheel weight can be added either us liquid or iron, and sometimes both are needed. Front-weighting may often be needed in addition with hitch-mounted tools. Here the simplest method — and easiest to install — may be cast iron weights which attach directly to the tractor frame.
The type of transmission on a tractor may have a lot to do with the amount of work that man and tractor will be doing. No one manufacturer offers all types of transmissions, so this could be an important factor in determining the kind of tractor you purchase.
Some tractors include a built-in provision for both 540 rpm and 1000 rpm speeds. If not, kits are available to convert your existing implements to a 1000 rpm tractor.
In all tractor purchases, operator comfort should be considered, since many of the little conveniences add up to important improvements in productivity.
A man can put in more hours with a tractor that's easy to operate and doesn't put him through a lot of physical stress.
Another factor lo be considered is that easy-to-operate controls can help him get more done during the hours he is working. Less time will be wasted in turning and in end rows. And chances are he'll need shorter rest breaks.
